“OK, stay still while I count,” squawked Cyril bossily “1, 2, 3… 16, 17, who’s moved?” he screeched agitated.  He flew back to the beginning.  “1, 2… 20, 21.  Who’s missing?”

The birds all began twittering at once.

“It’s Bert,” said one.

“It’s Shirley,” said another.

“I’m here,” chorused Bert and Shirley together.

“It’s Fenella AGAIN.  Always Fenella!”

With a flamboyant flap of wings she landed.

“Sorry, I got distracted,” chirped Fenella preening her feathers.

“Fenella, you must take this seriously, we have a long way to fly south and can’t keep stopping because some passing male takes your fancy.”

This is written with great spirit and voice! I mean, quite literally. I could hear the squawking Cyril, the chorus of Bert and Shirley … and LOL @ Fenella. These are great characters personified in a delightful story. Well done 😀
