PHOTO PROMPT © Roger Bultot
“You need to let go of your mother’s petticoat tails.”
“Apron strings”
“Pardon?”
“The expression is ‘let get go of your mother’s apron strings’, not petticoat tails.”
“You’re impossible!”
“Impossibly charming and irresistibly sexy!”
Gemma tried to stifle the smile that was strong-arming itself onto her lips as he wrapped his arms around her. No matter how infuriating he could be, he was also adorable.
“Nevertheless, you need to gain some independence from your mum. You’re twenty four; an adult. You don’t need to consult her over everything.”
“No, but…”
“No, buts Richard, you can choose your own socks now!”
Word Count: 100
Written for Friday Fictioneers – a 100 words story based on a photo prompt. Hosted by Rochelle. Read the other entries here.
Now there’s the height of independence, choice of your own socks. Just so long as he’s not responsible for matching them up.

Leaving the house with matching socks feels like an achievement to me with 2 toddlers to deal with every morning. I would welcome the help 🙂

I remember that when ceased to let my mother buy my shoes I didn’t need to buy a pair to grow in… I actually went down 2 sizes from 43 to 41… 🙂 love the petticoat tails.

That got a snort from me! I have been officially told by my soon-to-be 20-year-old to stop adding boxer shorts in his Christmas stocking. He hasn’t ex-nayed the socks yet, though… 😉

Christmas stockings are an ideal way to replenish depleting or disintegrating stocks!

Ha ha ha ha. I’m kind of comfortable in the socks department, though come to think of it, have never shopped for them, or any other piece of clothing, alone since I got married 🙂

Thanks Draliman. It’s socks, how difficult is it to choose one’s own socks?!

Ha! Very good Clare. But maybe Mum just has an excellent eye for socks …

Yes, she may have, but he really should be a bit more independent by 24!

Actually consulting his mother was a bit OTT, but my OH asked for socks for Christmas!

Thanks Liz. I’ve tried commenting on yours several times, but it doesn’t seem to be accepting it – just takes me back to the comment box. I thought it was hilarious though!

Hahaha. That was awesome, Clare. One has to be fortunate to not have a partner who is not a mumma’s boy.🙂
So well written!

Or maybe he might find the transition to independence easier if Gemma helped to choose his socks for him?

Oh, my word. There will ALWAYS be apron strings in this guy’s hands. If, at 24, he can’t choose his own socks, it’s just too late.

It sounds like he’s going to be trading in mum for girlfriend, if he makes that choice.
